I think part of the deal also was that Iran will take over Abu Musa, and the small and big tombs. Iran took over those islands when the Brit's left and one day before UAE declaring independence.

watching the Bahrain game with my sons. Made the comment that it belonged to Iran before. They were shocked. I went on telling them that not long ago Azarbaijan , Georgia, and Armenia also were a part of Iran. I don't know what took me so long to give them all this info.

 

I googled the time of bahrain's separation from Iran and that itself shocked me. I always thought it was in 50's but shockingly it was 1971. I always knew that the shitty British island had a lot to do with it. Here is what Google says.
