A great discussion about challenges of transition to democracy in iran. Excellent discussion. Amazing how much details the know

"A discussion with Professor Larry Diamond (Political Science, Stanford) and Professor Michael McFaul (FSI, Stanford), moderated by Dr. Abbas Milani (Stanford Iranian Studies) in March of 2023. *Click captions for Persian translation captions.

Part of the conference "Dialogues on Iran's Transition to Secular Democracy" co-hosted by Stanford Iranian Studies, Gozar.org, and KAI on March 25-26, 2023 at Stanford University.

Professor Larry Diamond is the Mosbacher Senior Fellow of Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford. Professor Michael McFaul is the director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. Dr. Abbas Milani is the faculty director of the Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies at Stanford University.

With more than 30+ panel talks, 24 roundtables, 50+ speakers, and more than 100+ experts and civil society activists, the conference explored challenges and pathways of transitioning from the Islamic Republic regime in Iran to a secular democracy. Inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in Iran, the conference convened a diverse set of thought-leaders, experts, and civil society activists to support dialogue and discourse around the establishment of a new democratic system of governance in Iran."

We all are cousins one way or another! Some closer than others 😊
Did I talk about the grid and solar energy too much? It’s not necessarily a passion but necessity for my work. I’m sure in few years when I retire, I would not give a damn about it one way or another!
By the way, you all need to put solar panels in your house. It’s pretty cool and you can tell others you saving the planet.😜

Zinsky:

It's all about someone's interest. For example, I have no interest in how electrical grid works that is why I do not even want to start looking into solar for my house but I am really interested to know why US is now behind in chip manufacturing and what is being done. Now you may have a valid question as why Farzad keep telling us this [smile]. But I think he wants to share his passion just like when you want to share your passion with the electric grid [smile]

My cousin works for a software company CEO is Israeli but lives in US. They have a good size operation in Tel Aviv. They actually have an internal quota set aside when they hire to make sure they also hire Palestinian Arabs. I also have regular conversation with an older American Jewish intellectual also a liberal Jew and actually liberal American. I have learned a lot about what is going on in Israel and how liberal & Israeli jews think. They are very much like secular liberal Iranians laughing at religious myths and despising their orthodox & uneducated folks and how someone like Bibi takes advantage of them. As American jews, they are also crystal clear as why they have such a connection to Israel which is hard to explain from our advantage but it is embedded in their DNA. I may not agree with all of it but certainly appreciate and so glad I learned about it

Zinsky. It is not about getting it. It is about hearing, processing it. Grasping it. And learn a few details if the subject is of interest to you.
For me the world events are interesting and interrelated. Events of the world affects everyone of us. That is why I just like to have broader exposure to what is going on what the motives are. It is just interesting.
Daei Napoleon stuff I am not much into because because it is not backed by any facts. But when you dig in you can see how Daei jan Napel'on theories kicks in by some.
There are now more factual evidences associated with 28 mordad or even 57 revolution. Shahin and I were talking about it as far as being able to go and actually see them at Stanford university.
For me all of these are interesting. From the two party systems here in the US, to Trump, to King Charles, and to iran and IRI. Putting emotions aside these things are just interesting.

KAmkAr so far ok. we are peons. We are not activists and we are not marked as anyone with any substance. You gotta hear the text and WhatsApp exchange coming from iran.

But Yeah there is always something in back of your mind there is something...

Iran is just best to travel. For us at our age for as long as we have the physical ability to do it. And specially iran because of backward and subpar infrastructures when it comes to tourism.

I do not spend much in Tehran or Rasht or other big cities. Avoid relatives, maybe visit just immediate sibilants. Not into going to every relatives house seeing the same people and eating the same kind of food.

Another issue with Taremi that has surfaced is that he will miss perhaps 6 matches for his club due to Asian Cup. That needs to be considered in all calculations

Farzad,
Let’s assume I start listening and somehow by miracle of universe I actually get it. Will it be for my personal benefit or I may use it some other way?
I’m being serious. Not trying to be an Ahole! There are subjects we learn because it will help us do better emotionally, financially or physically. Will learning international relations help me in anyway? I assume my arguments here will be more interesting but what else is my motivation to learn about that vs stuff that I can actually use in my daily life.
I, personally, running out of room in my brain. It’s leaking information more than it’s putting in. I got to use it wisely!

To understand international politics (again to understand it and not necessary to be accurate about it) is to listen to various debates and discussions. And then you connect the dots. And yes you may connect the wrong dots.

Anyways, knowledge and understanding the depth of issues cannot be achieved through headline news or what Biden said and what he did not. You need to hear things from all angles.

We cannot ignore the discussion below simply because in this discussions we have Israeli Intelligence Minister Gila Gamlie, or former National Security advisor Bolton. In this discussion you also hear from Mohsen Sazegara, Vahid Beheshti, and Mehrdad Yousefian.

Dr. Wurmser says a lot of interesting things. I think he has gotten it right on the money. (1:15)

If you are interested to hear about what is going on, you have to have hoseleh.
