Comments: Wow.... did not know. Income Taxation did not exist before and came to play in 1913, one year before start of WWI. Before taxing citizens, all government income was through import tariffs. Unlike England, Dutch, French or Portuguese, USA does no just conquer and colonize, we normally purchase land. Purchase of Louisiana, Alaska and Guam Puerto Rico and Philippines are just examples of it. The last territory purchased by the United States was the U.S. Virgin Islands, which were acquired from Denmark for $25 million.
