Iran’s envoy in Moscow denies new supreme leader being treated in Russia

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has denied a media report that the country’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is receiving medical treatment in Moscow, the state TASS news agency reports.

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida reported over the weekend that the 56-year-old, who was reported to have been injured in a US-Israeli airstrike that killed his father, had been moved to Moscow for medical treatment following President Vladimir Putin’s personal invitation.

Mexico willing to host Iran's FIFA World Cup matches after team refuses to play in USA

Mexico has offered to host Iran's matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after the team indicated it is unwilling to play in the United States amid escalating conflict involving the United States of America and Israel.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President said on Tuesday that the country would have "no problem" stepping in to stage Iran's fixtures, if world football's governing body agrees to a venue change.

Iran's football federation has already approached FIFA, requesting that their matches be moved out of the United States due to concerns over player safety. The request follows recent military escalation in the region, including joint air strikes involving the US, which have heightened fears around security and logistics for the team.

Iran are currently scheduled to play their group-stage matches in multiple American cities as part of the tri-nation hosting model for the 2026 World Cup, which is being jointly organised by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Beyond immediate security concerns, Iranian officials are also wary of potential travel restrictions, visa complications and the broader political climate, all of which could impact the team's preparation and participation during the tournament.

Mexico has now emerged as a potential alternative venue, with Sheinbaum's statement signalling the country's readiness to accommodate any changes, should FIFA decide to act on Iran's request.

However, relocating matches at this stage presents significant logistical challenges. The World Cup schedule, venue allocations, ticketing and broadcast commitments have already been finalised, making any late changes complex and potentially disruptive. FIFA has not yet issued an official response on the matter.

The situation has also cast uncertainty over Iran's participation in the tournament. If their concerns are not addressed, there remains a possibility that the team could reconsider taking part in the World Cup altogether.

With the 2026 edition set to be the first World Cup hosted across three countries, the development highlights how quickly global politics can intersect with sport. For now, Mexico has opened the door — the final call, however, rests with FIFA.

Iran has effectively targeted Elon Musk after his Starlink satellites enabled citizens to circumvent the regime's internet restrictions. Iranian authorities have imposed internet blackouts to regulate public access to war-related information.

However, technologically adept Iranians are connecting to Musk's unfiltered satellite network. Using Starlink in Iran now results in a two-year prison term.

The regime's enforcers have been conducting searches for Starlink equipment to prevent citizens from accessing it. A thriving underground economy has emerged, with entrepreneurs selling internet connectivity.

AFC official: Iran still set to play in 2026 World Cup

Iran has given no indication it intends to remove its national team from this summer's FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, a representative for the Asian Football Confederation said Monday.

The Iranian team, currently 20th in the FIFA rankings, is set to compete in its fourth consecutive World Cup and was placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt and Japan.

However, that participation has been much debated after the United States and Israel launched a series of airstrikes in Tehran, Iran, on Feb. 28 which killed former supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Donald Trump said last week that while the Iranian team is welcome to participate in the World Cup, it would be inappropriate for "their own life and safety."

Iran's sports minister said in the wake of the initial air strikes that it would be impossible for the country to participate in the event.

"It's a very emotional moment. Everybody's saying a lot of things," AFC general secretary Windsor John told reporters on Monday in Kuala Lumpur.

"At the end of the day, it's the federation who should decide if they're playing, and as of today, the federation has told us that they are going to the World Cup.

"They are our member. We want them to play. You know, they qualified, ... so we hope that they will solve their issues, whatever it is, and be able to participate."

Iran's three group-stage matches are scheduled to be in the U.S., two in Los Angeles and the third in Seattle.

Should the country elect not to participate, it would put FIFA in a unique bind for the first 48-nation World Cup in history. A replacement team could be named, either from the next-highest-ranked AFC squad or perhaps a team competing in this month's playoffs to determine the final six spots.

Or, FIFA could elect to not replace Iran, instead adjusting the group to only contain three teams.

برنامه سپاه برای درگیر شدن فیفا و آمریکا در جام جهانی

طبق اطلاعاتی که از یک منبع آگاه به «ایران وایر» رسیده، فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی با دستور نهادهای حکومتی، مذاکرات و پرسش‌های اولیه برای «کنار کشیدن از جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶» را به صورت «غیررسمی» با برخی مقامات کنفدراسیون فوتبال آسیا و فیفا آغاز کرده است. 

ایران وایر همچنین مطلع شده که بخشی از این پروژه توسط یک مدیر دو تابعیتی ایرانی در کنفدراسیون فوتبال آسیا پیش می‌رود. 

فدراسیون فوتبال وظیفه پیدا کرده در مورد «عواقب احتمالی کنار کشیدن تیم از جام جهانی» تحقیق کند و نتیجه را به وزارت ورزش و جوانان و سازمان اطلاعات سپاه اطلاع دهد. 

ابهام‌ حضور تیم فوتبال در جام جهانی از کجا آغاز شد؟ 

«مهدی تاج» رییس فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی مدعی شد که حضور تیم فوتبال در رقابت‌های جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶ «در هاله‌ای از ابهام» قرار دارد. 

تاج گفته بود: «بعد از این حمله، نمی‌توان انتظار داشت با امید به جام جهانی نگاه کنیم.» 

نکته کلیدی صحبت‌های رییس فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی جایی بود که او گفت که تصمیم‌گیری برای حضور یا عدم حضور تیم فوتبال در رقابت‌های جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶ در دست «مقام‌های مسوول» است و فدراسیون فوتبال را در این زمینه «تابع دستورات نهادهای ذی‌ربط» دانست. 

طبق قوانین فیفا، هیچ نهاد دولتی یا غیردولتی غیر از فدراسیون‌های فوتبال ملی، اجازه تصمیم‌گیری یا تصمیم‌سازی برای فدراسیون‌های کشورهای عضو فیفا را ندارند. 

«احمد دنیامالی» وزیر ورزش و جوانان جمهوری اسلامی موضوع کنار کشیدن تیم فوتبال از رقابت‌های جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶ را ۲۲اسفند۱۴۰۴ به شکل کامل‌تری تکرار کرد و گفت: «مجموعه حاکمیت به این نتیجه رسیده که اعضای تیم فوتبال در آمریکا از امنیت کافی برخوردار نخواهند بود و به همین دلیل گفته است که یا فیفا باید در قبال آمریکای متجاوز را از میزبانی مسابقات محروم کند، یا حاکمیت در مورد حضور تیم در این بازی‌ها، تصمیم دیگری خواهد گرفت. 

یک فرد آگاه نزدیک به وزارت ورزش و جوانان به ایران وایر گفته است که از شنبه ۲۳اسفند۱۴۰۴ به صورت رسمی به مهدی تاج ماموریت داده شده تا با هم‌فکری و همراهی یکی از مشاوران قدیمی خود در کنفدراسیون فوتبال آسیا، جوانب احتمالی و واکنش‌های فدراسیون جهانی فوتبال را برای این تصمیم بررسی کنند. 

فرد آگاه به ایران وایر گفته است که برای مجموعه حاکمیتی، «جرایم نقدی»، «تعلیق‌های بلند مدت احتمالی» یا «از دست دادن ادوار آینده جام جهانی» هیچ اهمیتی ندارد و فدراسیون فوتبال صرفا موظف شده، بهترین زمان‌بندی ممکن برای اعلام انصراف تیم فوتبال از حضور در رقابت‌های جام جهانی را به دست آورد. 

سپاه و وزارت ورزش به دنبال درگیری فیفا و آمریکا هستند؟ 

فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی می‌داند که جرایم سنگینی برای اجرایی شدن تصمیم کناره‌گیری از جام جهانی در انتظار فوتبال ایران خواهد بود. اما به گفته منبع ایران وایر، به نظر می‌رسد مجموعه حاکمیتی بیشتر به دنبال «ایجاد هزینه» است، نه علاج مشکلات. 

منبع ایران وایر گفته است «کارگروه مشترک وزارت ورزش و اطلاعات سپاه» که پس از اعتراضات دی‌‌ماه ۱۴۰۴ تشکیل شد، به دنبال پیدا کردن دقیق‌ترین راه حل برای درگیری کردن فیفا و ایالات متحده در زمان برگزاری جام جهانی هستند. 

فیفا ماه‌ می ۲۰۲۵ (اردیبهشت ۱۴۰۳) قوانین سختگیرانه و کاملی را برای تیم‌های ملی صعود کرده به جام جهانی که قصد کناره‌گیری از این مسابقات را داشته باشند در نظر گرفت. 

طبق این قوانین، اگر فدراسیون فوتبال کشور صعود کننده به جام جهانی، دست‌کم ۳۰ روز قبل از آغاز مسابقات انصراف خود را اعلام کند، موظف به  پرداخت ۲۵هزار فرانک سوییس معادل ۲۸ هزار یورو می‌شود. اما اگر کمتر از ۳۰ روز قبل از شروع مسابقات انصراف بدهد، دست‌کم جریمه ۵۰۰ هزار فرانک سوییس یا ۵۵۰ هزار یورویی انتظارش را خواهد کشید. 

پس گرفتن تمامی کمک‌های مالی که طی ۴ سال گذشته پرداخت شده، جبران خسارات کشور میزبان براساس برآوردهایی که از سوی میزبان اعلام می‌شود، جبران خسارات سه تیم همگروه که خود را برای رقابت با این تیم آماده کرده بودند و همین طور محرومیت قطعی از جام جهانی بعدی، حداقل جرایمی است که در این قوانین گنجانده شده بود.

Mohammed bin Salman urges Trump to 'keep hitting Iran hard'

Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, has been advising US President Donald Trump to “keep hitting the Iranians hard,” White House officials told the New York Times in a report published on Sunday.

This follows the same advice of the late Saudi King Abdullah, who had reportedly told Washington repeatedly to “cut off the head of the snake.”

Iran's new supreme leader 'flies to Russia for surgery' after Putin 'personally offers help'

Iran's new supreme leader has reportedly traveled to Moscow for leg surgery that was "personally offered by Putin" following injuries sustained in airstrikes.

Mojtaba Khamenei is believed to have been wounded during the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28. This follows Donald Trump's suggestion that the new leader might be deceased, given his absence from public view since his appointment.
