Iranian diplomats in Denmark and Australia have applied for asylum in their host countries, Iran International reported Thursday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The two asylum seekers were identified as Alireza Sohbati of the Iranian Embassy in Copenhagen and Mohammad Pournajaf of the Iranian Embassy in Canberra. Pournajaf had previously served as the chargé d'affaires of the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Australia, according to the anti-regime publication.

The U.S Agency for Global Media, which houses Voice of America, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night.
VOA Director Michael Abramowitz, who was put on leave alongside hundreds of his employees, praised the ruling.
"We are thrilled with Judge Lamberth’s ruling and look forward to getting back to work," Abramowitz told NBC News in a text message. "Voice of America has never been more needed. I am grateful for the resilience and dedication of VOA's amazing workforce."
Abramowitz sued the Trump administration last year to restore the organization’s editorial independence. That lawsuit became the case that Lamberth ruled on Tuesday.

FIFA has decided on YouTube as its 'preferred' broadcasting partner for the World Cup.
The next edition of the World Cup will take place across North America in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
With 48 teams set to compete, it will be the largest-scale tournament in its history and with those extra teams comes lots more games and the need for increased broadcasting scope both on television and online.
The partnership with YouTube will see the first 10 minutes of every single World Cup match be made available on YouTube, while some unconfirmed fixtures will be broadcast in their entirety on the video streaming site.
The deal also permits FIFA's broadcast partners to post highlights, behind-the-scenes footage and other content onto YouTube.
“By spotlighting Fifa’s premium content and unlocking new opportunities for media partners and creators, this agreement will engage global fans in ways never seen before,” said Mattias Grafstrom, FIFA secretary general.
“As the world’s attention turns to the action in Canada, Mexico and the United States, this collaboration with YouTube reinforces our ambition to maximise the tournament’s impact across the ever-evolving media landscape, offering fans everywhere easy access to an immersive view of the biggest single-sport event in history.”
“YouTube is focused on delivering a global, fan-centric, interactive approach to sports entertainment, and we are proud to be a preferred platform for the FIFA World Cup 2026. By providing official media partners and creators with premium content and unparalleled access, we’re delivering a comprehensive experience for fans and partners alike,” added Justin Connolly, YouTube vice president and global head of media & sports.
“Whether you’re a hardcore or a casual fan, this partnership will help usher in the next generation of fans while showcasing that no other platform unites the world around major moments like YouTube.”
There is also set to be an increase in archive content on YouTube, including more full matches from previous tournaments becoming available to watch for free.
“YouTube is focused on delivering a global, fan-centric, interactive approach to sports entertainment, and we are proud to be a preferred platform for the World Cup 2026," Justin Connolly, YouTube's global head of media and sports, said:

The 2026 World Cup will take place as scheduled, FIFA announced Tuesday after the Iranian ambassador and embassy in Mexico City claimed the country was negotiating with FIFA to move Iran’s three group-stage matches out of the U.S.
In a statement obtained by The Associated Press, FIFA said it is in "regular contact" with all countries competing in the upcoming tournament, which will largely take place in the U.S., but said the matches will take place as previously determined.
"FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including (the Islamic Republic of) Iran, to discuss planning for the FIFA World Cup 2026. FIFA is looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced on 6 December 2025."
Iran is scheduled to play in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on June 16 and Belgium on June 21 before finishing group play against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The U.S. is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Iran’s ambassador to Mexico Abolfazl Pasandideh urged FIFA to move the team’s games to Mexico in comments posted Monday on the embassy website. He reportedly said that the "best situation" for Iran would be to move the team’s games to Mexico.

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has denied a media report that the country’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is receiving medical treatment in Moscow, the state TASS news agency reports.
Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida reported over the weekend that the 56-year-old, who was reported to have been injured in a US-Israeli airstrike that killed his father, had been moved to Moscow for medical treatment following President Vladimir Putin’s personal invitation.
Mexico has offered to host Iran's matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after the team indicated it is unwilling to play in the United States amid escalating conflict involving the United States of America and Israel.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican President said on Tuesday that the country would have "no problem" stepping in to stage Iran's fixtures, if world football's governing body agrees to a venue change.
Iran's football federation has already approached FIFA, requesting that their matches be moved out of the United States due to concerns over player safety. The request follows recent military escalation in the region, including joint air strikes involving the US, which have heightened fears around security and logistics for the team.
Iran are currently scheduled to play their group-stage matches in multiple American cities as part of the tri-nation hosting model for the 2026 World Cup, which is being jointly organised by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Beyond immediate security concerns, Iranian officials are also wary of potential travel restrictions, visa complications and the broader political climate, all of which could impact the team's preparation and participation during the tournament.
Mexico has now emerged as a potential alternative venue, with Sheinbaum's statement signalling the country's readiness to accommodate any changes, should FIFA decide to act on Iran's request.
However, relocating matches at this stage presents significant logistical challenges. The World Cup schedule, venue allocations, ticketing and broadcast commitments have already been finalised, making any late changes complex and potentially disruptive. FIFA has not yet issued an official response on the matter.
The situation has also cast uncertainty over Iran's participation in the tournament. If their concerns are not addressed, there remains a possibility that the team could reconsider taking part in the World Cup altogether.
With the 2026 edition set to be the first World Cup hosted across three countries, the development highlights how quickly global politics can intersect with sport. For now, Mexico has opened the door — the final call, however, rests with FIFA.
