A look at some of the contenders to be Iran's supreme leader after the killing of Khamenei

Iran’s leaders are scrambling to replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for 37 years before he was killed in the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment

Iran's leaders are scrambling to replace Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who ruled the country for 37 years before he was killed in the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment.

It's only the second time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that a new supreme leader is being chosen. Potential candidates range from hard-liners committed to confrontation with the West to reformists who seek diplomatic engagement.

The supreme leader has the final say on all major decisions, including war, peace and the country's disputed nuclear program.

Rouhani, a relative moderate, was president of Iran from 2013 to 2021 and reached the landmark nuclear agreement with the Obama administration that U.S. President Donald Trump scrapped during his first term. Rouhani served on the Assembly of Experts until 2024, when he said he was disqualified from running for reelection. Rouhani criticized it as an infringement on Iranians' political participation.

[txhtzguvwo]

Iran soccer chief gives dire verdict on World Cup in USA as Donald Trump reveals timeline of military campaign

It comes as Donald Trump told the Daily Mail on Sunday in an exclusive interview that he views the military action in Iran to be as long as a four-week campaign.

'It's always been a four-week process,' the President said. 'We figured it will be four weeks or so.

'It's always been about a four-week process so - as strong as it is, it's a big country, it'll take four weeks - or less.'

Iran have been drawn into Group G at the World Cup in June, and are scheduled to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles - a city with a large Iranian population - and Egypt in Seattle.

The United States is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11 until July 19. The vast majority of games are in the United States, however.

FIFA has said it is monitoring the situation, while Andrew Giuliani, director of the White House World Cup task force, said on X on Saturday: 'We'll deal with soccer games tomorrow -- tonight, we celebrate their opportunity for freedom.'

Iran's football preparations for the tournament will be affected as no matches will be played during the 40-day mourning period for the death of their leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in Saturday's attacks.

Fans from Iran were already banned from entering the U.S. in the first iteration of the travel ban announced by the Trump administration.

Only coaches and players from the team were set to be granted visa exemptions to enter the country and compete in the tournament.

Ahmadinejad killed in strike on Tehran

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the former president of Iran, was killed in US and Israeli strikes on Tehran, Iranian state media reported.

Earlier reports on Saturday said three of his bodyguards were killed when strikes hit near his home in Tehran’s Narmak district, but that the former president had survived.

Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013, winning elections as an outsider who promised to “bring oil money to people’s tables” and govern as “a man made from the people’s essence”.

His tenure was marked by confrontation with the West over Iran’s nuclear programme, economic mismanagement that deepened poverty despite soaring oil revenues, and an increasingly authoritarian response to dissent.

After leaving office, Ahmadinejad increasingly positioned himself as a critic of the system he once championed, questioning corruption, calling for political prisoners’ release, and challenging the legitimacy of Iran’s power structure.

His defiance of Khamenei – from a figure who once embodied loyal implementation of the supreme leader’s vision –  made him a unique voice in Iranian politics: a hardline conservative who had become an opposition figure, not through ideological transformation but through personal grievance and political calculation.

He is survived by his wife Azam Sadat Farahi and their three children.

Iran's soccer federation says World Cup participation in doubt

The president of Iran's soccer federation says he does not know if the national team can play World Cup matches in the United States following the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment of his country.

"What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope," Mehdi Taj told sports portal Varzesh3 as Iran traded strikes with Israel as part of a widening war prompted by the bombardment.

The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second day on Sunday after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw the future of the Islamic Republic into uncertainty and raised the risk of regional instability.

Iran has been drawn in Group G at the World Cup and is scheduled to play in Los Angeles -- where it faces New Zealand and Belgium on June 15 and 21, respectively -- before it plays Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

The United States is hosting the tournament with Canada and Mexico from June 11-July 19.
Fans from Iran were already banned from entering the U.S. in the first iteration of the travel ban announced by the Trump administration.

FIFA did not immediately reply to an email from The Associated Press over the current situation regarding Iran's participation in the World Cup, but said on Saturday it was monitoring developments in the region
