Trump approved Iran operation after Netanyahu argued for joint killing of Khamenei, sources say

Sources told Reuters that a private phone call between the Israeli prime minister, in which he stressed that Trump could 'make history' by toppling the ayatollah regime and take revenge for Iranian efforts to assassinate him, was central in Trump's decision to strike when he did

Less than 48 hours before the U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran began, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by phone to President Donald Trump about the reasons for launching the kind of complex, far-off war the American leader once had campaigned against.

Both Trump and Netanyahu knew from intelligence briefings earlier in the week that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his key lieutenants would soon meet at his compound in Tehran, making them vulnerable to a "decapitation strike" – an attack against a country's top leaders often used by Israelis but traditionally less so by the United States.

But new intelligence suggested that the meeting had been moved forward to Saturday morning from Saturday night, according to three people briefed on the call.

The call has not been previously reported.

Netanyahu, ‌determined to move forward with an operation he had urged for decades, argued that there might never be a better chance to kill Khamenei and to avenge previous Iranian efforts to assassinate Trump, these people said. Those included a murder-for-hire plot allegedly orchestrated by Iran in 2024, when Trump was a candidate.

By the time the call took place, Trump had already approved the idea of the United States carrying out a military operation against Iran but had not yet decided when or under what circumstances the United States would get involved, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive internal deliberations.

The three sources briefed on the call said they believed it, along with the intelligence showing a closing window to kill Iran's leader, was a catalyst for Trump's final decision to order the military on February 27 to move ahead with Operation Epic Fury.

The first bombs struck on Saturday morning, February 28. Trump announced that evening that Khamenei was dead.

دعوت سرمربی تیم ملی از ۳۵ بازیکن برای دیدار برابر نیجریه و کاستاریکا

امیر قلعه‌نویی اسامی بازیکنان تیم ملی فوتبال ایران برای دو دیدار تدارکاتی فروردین ١۴٠۵ را اعلام کرد.

به گزارش ایلنا به نقل از سایت رسمی فدراسیون فوتبال، بر اساس اعلام سرمربی تیم ملی فوتبال ایران ٣۵ بازیکن زیر برای اردوی اماده سازی و انجام دو دیدار تدارکاتی برابر نیجریه و کاستاریکا به تیم ملی دعوت شدند:

تیم ملی فوتبال فردا برای انجام این دو دیدار راهی ترکیه می‌شود. تیم‌ ایران در روزهای هفتم و یازدهم فروردین به ترتیب به مصاف تیمهای نیجریه و کاستاریکا می‌رود.

خبر و تصاویر حضور ملی‌پوشان در اردوی تیم ملی و عزیمت به ترکیه از طریق خروجی‌های رسانه‌ای فدراسیون‌ فوتبال در اختیار رسانه‌ها قرار می‌گیرد.

Iran Backtracks, Confirms Participation in 2026 World Cup

The Iranian Football Federation has reversed its stance and confirmed that its national team will participate in the 2026 World Cup, putting an end to several days of uncertainty marked by political tensions and security warnings.

The decision at least partially clarifies the outlook for the tournament to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, although it leaves logistical and diplomatic questions unresolved.

The announcement comes after mixed signals from Tehran, including official statements describing the team’s presence in the tournament as “impossible.” That message had raised alarms within FIFA and among the host federations, given the unprecedented possibility of a withdrawal just months before the start of the World Cup.

امیر قلعه‌نویی با دستور نهادهای امنیتی، سردار آزمون را خط زد

فدراسیون فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی، جمعه ۲۹اسفند ۱۴۰۴ اسامی ۳۵ بازیکن دعوت شده به اردوی تیم فوتبال را اعلام کرد. 

در این فهرست، نام «سردار آزمون» مهاجم تیم «شباب الاهلی» امارات دیده نمی‌شود. پیش از این خبرگزاری «فارس» رسانه وابسته به سپاه پاسداران، از مقام‌های قوه قضاییه خواسته بود که اموال و دارایی‌های سردار آزمون را به دلیل «انتشار تصاویری از حاکم دبی» در استوری اینستاگرامش، توقیف کنند. 

«محمدحسین میثاقی» مجری صداوسیما نیز پنچ‌شنبه ۲۸اسفند خواهان خط خوردن و کنار گذاشتن سردار آزمون از تیم فوتبال جمهوری اسلامی و عدم حضور او در جام جهانی ۲۰۲۶ شد. 

در فهرستی که امیر قلعه‌نویی اعلام کرده، نام «دنیس اکرت» نیز دیده می‌شود. «ایران وایر» ۲۷آذر۱۴۰۴ از تلاش «علیرضا جهانبخش» یکی از کاپیتان‌های تیم فوتبال و برخی دلالان برای وارد شدن نام دنیس اکرت به فهرست این تیم خبر داده بود. 

دنیس اکرت متولد شهر «بن» آلمان در سال ۱۹۹۷ از پدر و مادری آلمانی است و در گفت‌وگو با رسانه‌های ایران ادعا کرده بود که پدربزرگش اصالتی ایرانی داشته است.
