Oman hires Carlos Queiroz as coach in push for World Cup qualification

Oman has hired Carlos Queiroz as its national-team coach ahead of autumn games that will determine if the country advances to the World Cup for the first time

MUSCAT, Oman (AP) — Oman hired Carlos Queiroz as its national-team coach Tuesday ahead of autumn games that will determine if the country advances to the World Cup for the first time.

 

The veteran Portuguese tactician led Iran into the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and will take over with immediate effect.

Oman and five other countries — Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Indonesia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar — have reached the fourth round of qualifying. From groups of three, the two winners will qualify for the 2026 World Cup next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The fourth-round draw will be on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The matches are in October. After those, there’s one additional round — the second-place finishers square off in November for a spot in a playoff tournament.

“This comes as part of efforts to improve the team’s performances for upcoming games,” the Oman Football Association said in a statement.

Queiroz replaces Rashid Jaber, who led Oman to a fourth-place finish in the third round to keep qualification hopes alive. The 72-year-old Queiroz has also coached Real Madrid, Portugal, Egypt, Colombia and Qatar.

 

Queiroz was fired as Qatar coach in December 2023 after 11 games in charge.

Taremi to Reject A Move to Saudi Pro League

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi reportedly wants to stay in Europe and would reject a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Taremi joined Inter Milan last summer. He arrived on a free transfer after his contract with Porto had expired. However, things have just never quite worked out for Taremi at Inter.

The 32-year-old scored just three goals in his first season in a Nerazzurri shirt. It would be an understatement to say that this was below expectations.

Therefore, there have been persistent rumors that Taremi could be on his way out of the San Siro after just one season.

Then, Inter would be happy to offload Taremis 6 million gross wages next season.

As far as Taremi himself, he would be willing to consider offers to leave Inter this summer, Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport reported.

However, the 32-year-old is keen to stay in Europe. He feels that he still has more left to give at the top level even if it is not at Inter.

Therefore, Taremi will turn down offers from the Saudi Pro League.

کی‌روش پس از هدایت تیم ملی ایران در جام جهانی ۲۰۲۲ که توفیقی برای کشورمان به همراه نداشت، به‌عنوان سرمربی تیم ملی قطر فعالیت کرد که با آمار پنج برد، یک تساوی و چهار شکست از این سمت برکنار شد.
