You just need to be registered as a democrat to run under the umbrella Democratic Party.

 

DNC at the end of the primaries choses and nominates their party's nomination for presidency during the Democratic convention. They could even chose a candidate who came in 2nd by using the superdelegates. This superdelegates rule has slightly changed so it does not screw the front runner who had the popular votes in the primaries. Like what happened with Sanders in 2016 when he was put aside to have Hillary be the nominee for the Democrats.

 

RNC does not have such rule and that is how they got stuck with Trump in 2016. But still RNC can nominate anyone they want and does not need to be the front runner.
